DTO holds fancy numbers’ auction

The city residents' fetish for fancy numbers for their vehicles was to be seen to be believed on Friday.

Residents gathered at an open auction of fancy numbers conducted by the district transport office (DTO) in the auditorium of Nehru Sidhant Kendra here. For this auction, advertisement was published by DTO last month. In response, the office received 736 applications from across the district for this auction.

The office had organized this auction for fancy numbers mentioned in rule 42-A of Schedule 6 of Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. The series of fancy numbers from PB-10-CZ-0001 to PB-10-CZ-0270 was auctioned by the department. For apparently the most coveted of the VIP numbers, 0001, the highest bid was made by Charanjeet Kaur. She purchased the number for her Ford Endeavour car after offering Rs 3 lakh 10 thousand for the same. Auction for the number was a curious affair, with three persons in the fray. Charanjeet Kaur finally took the cake by accounting for the highest bid.

Applicants keenly bid for fancy numbers like 0007 and 0009 as well. The number 0007 went for Rs 1.21 lakh, while the highest amount bid on 0009 was Rs 1 lakh 11 thousand. Bidder Gaurav said he had a craze for such numbers and every year, he became part of the auction so that he could bid for his favourite number. He said what keeps the craze going is not a superstition behind any specific number. "I am simply fascinated with VIP numbers," he added.

DTO Ashwani Kumar said, "This time, the department conducted the auction in the beginning of the year. This is the reason why the auction reported bidders in low number."
